5 Tips for Summertime Hair Care
1. Pre-Swimming Save
The next time you’re getting ready to go take a dip, try applying an oil based protective barrier to your hair. This doesn’t need to be anything fancy. You can use oil, sunscreen, hand cream, vaseline, or a thick conditioner.
If oiling up doesn’t sound appealing, try soaking it up. Your hair is like a sponge; it absorbs water, but it can only absorb so much. To avoid having your hair soak up the lake or pool water, get it wet with clean water before diving in.
Product Recommendation: IGK Blocked Water-Resistant Hair Shield is made to act like a swim cap for your hair. It shields the hair from all water types, and provides UV protection. Can also be used as a styling aide for a wet beachy look.
2. Clarify
Always wash your hair immediately after swimming! But from time to time, you may also need a little more than shampoo. Clarifying Treatments are my number 1 recommendation as an add-on to your summertime hair appointments. They gently remove build-up from product, hard water, mineral water, chlorine, and medications. I choose to use Malibu’s Crystal Gel for my Clarifying Treatments. This also adds antioxidants and pure Vitamin C, which leaves your hair fresh, and full of bounce and shine.
Product Recommendation: Malibu also has a Swimmers Shampoo and Conditioner set that’s great for your post-swim wash.
3. Cover it up
If nothing else, one product you should be putting in your hair this summer is something with UV Protection. If you’re enjoying a “no product” kind of summer day, grab a hat! Too much sun on the hair can damage the outer layer of your hair, which affects the overall quality and integrity of the hair.
Product Recommendation: Joico Blonde Life Brightening Veil is great for UV and Thermal protection. Spray on wet hair, comb through, and style.
4. Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate!
Summertime can be very drying on the hair and skin. All I can say is that you’ve got to hydrate! Drink your water, so you’re hydrated from the inside. Put on your lotion, so you’re moisturized from the outside. Keep a hydrating shampoo and conditioner in your shower, so your hair can stay hydrated and moisturized. If your hair needs a little extra love, use a mask or oil as needed.
Product Recommendation: If you're reaching for an oil, try Argon oil. It's high in antioxidants and vitamin E, which is exactly what your hair needs!
5. Keep Up on Your Hair Appointments
Summertime tends to be the time of the year when people let their hair go. In reality, it’s the time when you need to give your hair the most care. Keep up on your regularly scheduled appointments! Regular trims will keep your hair healthy and beautiful. Toning your colored hair will keep it fresh, and avoid fading.
